GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TAKES THE FIGHT AGAINST IUU

  • IUU robs 26 million tons of fish caught and USD 23 billion worth of seafood a year.
  • To combat IUU, Canada launches a “dark vessels” program. It provides modern satellite data and analysis for island nations and coastal states, where IUU remains a concern.
  • The government also ratified Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) to detect and remove IUU.

GLOBAL WHITEFISH SUPPLY IS FORECASTED TO INCREASE BY 3.7% IN 2021

  • According to Ragnar Nystoyl – Analyst of Kontali, whitefish supply is forecasted to grow by more than 700.000 metric tons compared to the year 2020. Pangasius made up the lion’s share with a rise of 300.000 metric tons.
  • Data from Kontali also predicts a 3.7% lift in global farmed and wild whitefish in 2021.

REOPENING MARKET BOOSTS NORWAY’S SEAFOOD EXPORT

  • In May 2021, the country sold 8.3 billion NOK (USD 988.4 million) worth of products to overseas countries, an increase of 6 % or NOK 484 million (USD 57.6 million) compared with May 2020.
  • CEO of Norwegian Seafood Council, said the NSC expected further demand growth.

EU: IMPORT OF CANNED TUNA DECREASES IN Q1/2021

  • IEU’s total imports of canned tuna in Q1/2021 reach 109,780 metric tons, 17% lower than the high peak of Q1/2020.
  • Reasons for the decrease include: high level of inventory due to Covid-19, a crisis in F&B industry and closure of tourism.

DEMAND RISES, EUROPEAN IMPORTERS SEEK TRUSTWORTHY SHRIMP SUPPLY

Summer is predicted as the high peak of shrimp demand in the year.

In the Northwest, importers are sourcing high volume from reliable alternative suppliers because Covid-19 has caused disruption in India’s production and transportation, as well as financial damage to EU buyers.

In Southern Europe, importers are also planning to buy shrimps for Christmas, as they believe processing can be delayed due to factories’ limitations in Covid-19.
